About the Tutor

Sharon is a very friendly and highly qualified full-time language tutor with several years' experience teaching French, Spanish and English as a Foreign or Additional Language to all ages and abilities, as well as English Language and Literature GCSE, English Language A Level and English for Academic Purposes.

Sharon is a GCSE and A Level examiner and, in a voluntary capacity, ESOL Advisor and Lead Tutor for a local organisation supporting refugees and asylum seekers. She also teaches English as Additional Language (ESOL/EAL) in local High Schools. Sharon runs regular French and Spanish Language Meetups in Worcester; with hundreds of online members, these friendly gatherings attract up to 30 attendees each time (please see below).

Sharon has lived in France and Spain for many years and consequently has extensive knowledge of the culture of both countries, and also that of the Francophone and Hispanic worlds in general. Sharon speaks French and Spanish much as a native speaker and can thus offer excellent support around pronunciation skills and conversation.

Face-to-face tuition

Available for learners in the Wyre Forest, north Worcestershire and surrounding areas, face-to-face tuition is offered on a one-to-one or small group basis. Depending on the learner's address this could take place in the learner's home or the tutor's home. Lessons tend to be centred around multi-modal PowerPoints which students are welcome to take away, so that they can reinforce their learning between classes using a PC, tablet or smartphone, and extra support and lessons can be offered online. Homework and feedback can also be sent and received via email.

Online tuition

Virtual teaching/learning can be very effective and not so different from face-to-face tuition. Every teaching tool available to both tutor and student in face-to-face lessons is, generally, also available when teaching/learning online. Meanwhile, online tuition offers students the most relaxing environment, so they are likely to feel more confident and, consequently, are better able to focus on learning, whilst neither time nor money is spent travelling to and from the tutor.

Monthly French and Spanish Meetups

To give adult French and Spanish learners the opportunity to use their language in real-world situations, Sharon organises two monthly Worcester-based Meetups, one for French speakers and one for Spanish speakers, which are open to anyone wanting to practise their additional language with like-minded linguists in a friendly atmosphere over a drink or two.

Why learn a language?

There are so many different reasons for learning a new language. Learning another language helps you understand the world better; it enables you to appreciate other ways of living and thinking and other cultures, as well as helps you to better understand your own. Meanwhile, recent studies in Sweden, Canada and Scotland respectively suggest: bilinguals have better memories and are more cognitively creative and mentally flexible than monolinguals; the onset of Alzheimer's disease and dementia occurs later in bilinguals; and the advantages of bilingual benefits are experienced by people who start learning languages later in life, not just by children born into bilingual families.

So, if you are studying at school and preparing for exams, or you are an older learner working towards qualifications, wanting to learn a language for pleasure and conversation or to further your career, MFL Worcestershire can help you achieve your goal.
